I would rank "Die Frau ohne Schatten" as tied with "Elektra" for Number One among Strauss operas. My rankings would be as follows: 1/2 Elektra/Die Frau ohne Schatten. n addition to such unconventional and popular works as Elektra (1909), Richard Strauss (German, 1864-1949) composed the opera for the German translation of Oscar Wilde's adaptation of Salome, first performed by the Dresden Opera in 1905. 2021-04-21 · My appetite for opera blows hot and cold, but I've been exploring several R Strauss operas this summer. I enjoyed Salome (Solti) and Ariadne Auf Naxos (Levine) immediately. And parts of Die Frau Ohne Schatten (Solti). And not much of Der Rosenkavalier (Bohm). I've liked Strauss's orchestral music for a long time, but ignored his operas having shunned the art form. Having come to enjoy it, it was appropriate that one of the most important contributors to the genre should be on my playlist.

I personally prefer the orchestral works of Richard Strauss (tone poems, concertos, Lieders etc.), but it's interesting to see the different style of composition Strauss used in his operas, he changed from the use of chromatism, fluid tonality, motives, dissonance to that sort of tonal, manneristic Neoclassicism of his late period.

2021-04-08 · I just finished watching R. Strauss' Salome, an opera I hadn't seen or heard since 2007. It reminded me of how good it is. Then I was thinking of his other operas, and how most likely Der Rosenkavalier will remain his most popular one. But I don't think it is his best (don't read me wrong, I love it, I just love some of his others even more).
