Very little is known of Dowland's early life, but it is generally thought he was born in London, or possibly Dublin. It is known that he went to Paris in 1580 where he was in service to the ambassador to the French court.

From 1597, John Dowland published books of songs as well as pieces for the lute. In 1612 he was appointed to the post of second lutenist at the court of Charles I of England. Famous in all Europe, John Dowland was probably the greatest lutenist of his time.
